Helpful Tips
- It is recommended to work on a lawn when it is not waterlogged, between mid-April and early May
- To start, clean and rake the lawn
- Next comes aeration, composting and seeding of the lawn
- WHICH SOIL IS USED FOR COMPOSTING? Plantation mix or marine compost is recommended if the soil is lacking in nutrients or very depleted
- Once the lawn is seeded, using a lawn rake make S shaped movements to lightly bury the seeds
- For the next 2 to 3 weeks following seeding, keep the soil moist (not soggy) and avoid walking on the lawn
Sod can be laid from May until mid-November (more or less). Each roll is 2” x 5” and covers 10 feet².
PREPARING THE LAWN
- Ensure you have the right soil for sod (see *)
- With a shovel, spade, spading fork or rototiller, loosen the soil to a depth of 2-4 inches (5-10cm)
- Level the soil with a rake on a gradual rising slope towards the house to avoid water accumulation
- Spread fertilizer to support rooting the lawn
NOTE: If it is necessary to raise or change the soil, it is still important to have 2-4 inches (5-10 cm) of loose earth to lay the sod on.
HOW TO LAY SOD
- Place the first row on the ground. For the second row, stagger the edges of sod in a brick work pattern (image of green bricks please)
- A good utility knife or sharp turf edger is essential for cutting
WATERING
For the next 14-16 days it is important to water the lawn every day, especially during summer months (exception: rainy days and the day following). Ensure that the water soaks through the sod and the soil.
